Ntobwe School
Gitega Province, Burundi
This was the first school that we built in Burundi. It caters for over 600 students, who are taught by only 6 teachers, in only 6 classrooms - try that in your school!
Built near Burundi's second city Gitega, Ntobwe School consists of 6 classrooms, an administration block and toilets. Land for the project was provided by the Burundian Government and FacilitAid’s local partner undertook to install water and electricity to the site. The plans, approved by the government, were checked in the UK by one of our Trustees - a qualified Quantity Surveyor.
The site was cleared and levelled. Foundations were dug and footings cast. The walls went up, the roof went on and doors and windows went in - all by hand! In a move designed to stimulate the local economy and to give a sense of ownership to the community, all materials and labour were sourced locally. Many of the locals who worked on the project, now have children attending the school.
The project was completed during 2005 on time and within budget and is now providing education for around 600 primary-aged children. These numbers are achieved by operating a two shift system - two groups of children using the school, one in the morning the other in the afternoon.
Two of our Trustees visited the project at its completion and met with the Government’s Education Minister, teachers, builders and some of the children. It was a special day both for the people of Ntobwe and for FacilitAid, as it marked the completion of this project and the beginning of the next phase in our ongoing commitment to help provide schools in strategic locations throughout Burundi.
