Muzye School

Rutana Province, Burundi

Key Info
The President of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, came and officially opened this school! The event was a huge community celebration - and, if we're honest, we were pretty pleased, too!

Muzye is a small village near to the town of Rutana in Southern Burundi. There was no school at all in the area and consequently around 5,000 children, many of whom were returning refugees, had no opportunity for education. The illiteracy rate in the area was as high as 95%.

We constructed a Primary & Secondary School comprising 11 classrooms, 2 toilet blocks and administration offices near to the village. This was a major educational breakthrough for the area and thanks to the Government’s endorsement, will provide on-going education for many years to come.

Alongside the school, we also provided an agricultural project. As a result of the war and also the spread of HIV/Aids, many children have not had the opportunity to learn from their parents how to grow their own food, so the school will teach the children sustainable farming techniques.

The project was built in phases. The first phase saw the construction of an access road, a secure compound, a block of 6 Primary classrooms and a toilet block. The second phase brought the secondary classrooms, the administration office, a second toilet block and the Agricultural Project. Work on the first phase began in July 2006 and the school was completed in September 2007.
