Mabuga School

Kayanza Province, Burundi

Key Info
This school is by far our most crowded school, with nearly 25% more children enrolled than there are desks to sit at! Well, it was either that or a 10 mile walk to school!

Mabuga Primary School is in the North West of Burundi and opened in 2008, providing 720 school places. Before FacilitAid opened this school, the local children had a 16 kilometre trek to the nearest facility and consequently many families did not send their children to school.

While we were in the process of building the local parents and grandparents made regular visits to the site to check on progress and to ask, “How soon can we send our children here?”

The school is located at the top of a hill and is our only school where we have been unable to provide a clean, running water source for the use of the school and local families. Water is available down in the valley and all water needed for the build was carried up to the site by local people.
