Lake Tanganyika is the third largest lake in the world by volume and home to more than 2,000 plant and animal species (about 600 of which exist nowhere else in the world).
Kagongo School is FacilitAid’s 5th building project - opened in early 2009 and providing over 600 places The school is set in a stunning location, overlooking Lake Tanganyika.
The children at Kagongo are excited to have their new school and their class subjects include Maths, French, Swahili, Biology, History, Geography, Farming, Sport and a little English! The teachers here, as with all our schools, have a punishing schedule as they each teach two classes of 50+ children – one in the morning, the other in the afternoon.
90% of the pupils at Kagongo School are from refugee families who have recently returned home from Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Family sizes vary between 5 and 11 and family income is generated by growing crops or fishing on the lake.
